Scholarships for Uncommon Majors

Do you think your major is uncommon? Do your friends ask you why, of all majors, you picked yours? It is important to realize that majoring in a field that is not common might make you more likely to be awarded scholarship money.

For instance, the Hispanic College Fund offers scholarships for students majoring in:

  • Hospitality—which can include a career in the hotel industry, restaurant management, and much more!

  • Pharmacy—this career allows you to combine your love of chemistry and your love of people!

Irene San Juan and Elisa Sepulveda

Student Spotlight: Irene San Juan and Elisa Sepulveda

Irene San Juan on being mentored:

Even though she lives in New York, I sometimes feel like my mentor is sitting right next to me, guiding me.

"I entered the room and immediately saw my name on a place card. A young woman in the seat next to mine presented herself as Elisa Sepulveda, my mentor. She asked me many questions about myself and was eager to get to a sense of who I am. I was surprised that she already had a copy of my resume with suggestions on how to improve it, as well as tips on handling my workload at school. Before we parted, we exchanged information and agreed that we would continue to communicate with each other when we left."

Elisa Sepulveda on mentoring:

Being a mentor to Irene has taught me a lot about myself. I see a lot of who I was in college in Irene.

"As a mentor, I have learned from my mentee. I have learned to stay committed through Irene's example of balancing her relationship with her family and her extracurricular activities. Most importantly, I have made a lifelong friend. The first time we met, we clicked, and I hope that we can continue to nurture our relationship and provide professional guidance to each other as well as be friends. I am honored to be a part of this program and I look forward to continuing to mentor with HCF in the future."

Jaime Lizarraga

Senior Adviser to Speaker of the House,
Nancy Pelosi

Jaime Lizarraga serves as Director of Member Services and Senior Adviser to the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.

"I have been the Speaker's point person on legislation to address the foreclosure crisis, the financial markets crisis, and the rescue package for the automobile industry. This has meant crafting and negotiating legislation with the Bush Administration, with Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate, and with interest groups.

...Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd make it this far. I am humbled but feel fortunate and privileged, while owing much of my success to my parents' and my grandmother's early encouragement and advice. When I was born, my parents were Mexican migrant farm workers in California's Central Valley and did not have much of a formal education. Despite this, they always told me that they wanted me to get as much education as I could..."
