WASHINGTON (Aug. 18, 2010) - After conducting a national search through Russell Reynolds Associates, the Hispanic College Fund announced today that Chancellor Carlos E. Santiago of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) has been named to lead the organization as the new chief executive officer, effective Oct. 1.  Joseph A. Petrone, who provided distinguished leadership as interim CEO, will continue serving on the board of directors as vice chair of finance and transition duties to Dr. Santiago.


Los Angeles, CA (Aug. 16, 2010) - 127 students from Roosevelt, Belmont, Santee, Garfield, Grant, and Wilson high schools were hosted on the campus of UCLA on Aug. 10-13 for a four-day, three-night college empowerment program that inspired the students to graduate from college, become professionals, and give back to the community. While on campus, the students participated in various workshops with the themes of college, career, and community service. At the conclusion of the program, 100% of the students reported they will attend college, 51% said they would pursue careers in business and STEM, and 98% said they were confident in their ability to make a difference in their communities.


WASHINGTON (Aug. 9, 2010) - The Hispanic College Fund today elected Lockheed Martin Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Dr. Ray O Johnson, to its board of directors. Dr. Johnson offers an array of experience to the board and he will assist in guiding the Hispanic College Fund toward continued success.


Los Angeles, CA (Aug. 9, 2010) - More than 125 Hispanic high school students from urban Los Angeles will be hosted on the campus of UCLA from August 10-13 to launch the second annual Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Symposium, a four-day, three-night college empowerment program of the Hispanic College Fund. Students were selected from a competitive admissions pool of applicants based on essay responses, GPA, grade level, and leadership potential. Students will participate in college and career workshops, attend a college admission fair, connect with local Hispanic professionals and college admissions officers, and compete for $10,500 in scholarships.


San Jose, CA (August 3, 2010) - 90 students from East Side Union high schools were hosted on the campus of Santa Clara University on July 28-31 for a four-day, three-night college empowerment program designed to inspire students to achieve higher education, pursue professional careers, and give back to the community. While on campus, students participated in various workshops with the themes of college, career, and community service. At the conclusion of the program, 97% of the students reported they will attend college, 59% said they would pursue careers in business and STEM, and 85% said they were confident in their ability to make a difference in their communities.


Los Angeles, CA (August 2, 2010) - More than 200 college students, community leaders and corporate employees will volunteer for the 2nd Annual Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Symposium, serving as professional role models, guest speakers, competition judges, workshop facilitators, and more. The 2010 Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Symposium will be held from August 10-13 at UCLA. Santa Clara, CA (July 28, 2010) - Hispanic leaders from many of Silicon Valley's largest corporations and organizations will convene on the campus of Santa Clara University tomorrow morning, July 29th, from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. on Kenna/St. Ignatius Lawn to share their stories of educational and professional success with about 100 students from the East Side Union High School District.

Students were selected from a competitive admissions pool of more than 275 initial applicants based on essay responses, GPA, grade level, and leadership potential. Students will participate in college and career workshops, attend a college admission fair, connect with local Hispanic professionals and college admissions officers, and compete for $10,500 in scholarships.


Fresno, CA (July 26, 2010) - Nearly 100 Latino high school students were hosted on the campus of Fresno State University on July 20-23 for a four-day, three-night college empowerment program designed to inspire students to achieve higher education, pursue professional careers, and give back to the community. While on campus, students participated in various workshops with the themes of college, career, and community service. At the conclusion of the program, 99% of the students reported they will attend college, 55% said they would pursue careers in business and STEM, and 97% said they were confident in their ability to make a difference in their communities.

Fresno, CA (July 20, 2010) - More than 100 students, community leaders and corporate employees will volunteer for the fifth annual Central Valley Hispanic Youth Symposium, serving as professional role models, guest speakers, competition judges, workshop facilitators, and more. The 2010 Central Valley Hispanic Youth Symposium commences today and will be held from July 20-23 at Fresno State University in partnership with the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium.


Washington, DC (July 13, 2010) - Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and United States Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner will serve as the honorary co-chairs of the 2010 Virginia Hispanic Youth Institute, a program of the Hispanic College Fund. The four-day, three-night college empowerment program is expected to serve approximately 200 Hispanic high school students on the campus of Virginia State University from July 14-17.


Petersburg, VA (June 25, 2010) - Applications from high school students to attend the Virginia Hispanic Youth Symposium topped 713, a 18 percent increase over 2009 numbers.  Students throughout the state applied online to attend the seventh annual Virginia Hispanic Youth Symposium, a four-day, three-night college empowerment program for at-promise high school students.  The event will be held at Virginia State University from July 14-17 and is hosted in partnership with the U.S. Social Security Administration.


Tempe, AZ (June 25, 2010) - Applications from high school students to attend the Arizona Hispanic Youth Symposium topped 841. Students throughout the state applied online to attend the second Arizona Hispanic Youth Symposium, a four-day, three-night college empowerment program for at-promise high school students.  The event will be held at Arizona State University from July 7-10 and is hosted in partnership with Chandler Compadres and Arizona State University.


Towson, Maryland (June 22, 2010) - Applications from high school students to attend the Maryland Hispanic Youth Symposium topped 672, a two percent increase over 2009 numbers.  Students throughout the state applied online to attend the seventh annual Maryland Hispanic Youth Symposium, a four-day, three-night college empowerment program for at-promise high school students.  The event will be held at Towson University from June 29-July 2 and is hosted in partnership with the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) and Towson University.


Caguas, Puerto Rico (June 21, 2010) - Today, the Hispanic College Fund announced the winners of the Manuel Candamo Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to Puerto Rican students who demonstrate a commitment to community service and academic excellence.  The scholarships will be presented to students at an award luncheon at Caguas Real Hotel & Casino in Caguas, Puerto Rico on June 25, 2010. A total of $14,000 in scholarship monies will be awarded.


Washington, D.C. (June 11, 2010) - Applications from high school students to attend the Hispanic Youth Symposia in eight communities across the country topped 5,500, a 51 percent increase over 2009 numbers.  Students throughout the country applied online to attend a Hispanic Youth Symposium, the four-day, three-night college empowerment program for at-promise high school students.  The programs are held at various universities and will take place throughout the summer across the nation.


Dallas, Texas (June 3, 2010) - Applications from high school students to attend the Dallas Hispanic Youth Symposium topped 1,245, a 134 percent increase over 2009 numbers.  Students throughout the state applied online to attend the second annual Dallas Hispanic Youth Symposium, a four-day, three-night college empowerment program for at-promise high school students.  The event will be held at Southern Methodist University from June 16-19 and is hosted in partnership with Southern Methodist University, the U.S. Social Security Administration, Dallas Independent School District, Carrollton-Farmer's Branch Independent School District, the Academic Success Program, and Education Is Freedom.


Albuquerque, NM (June 3, 2010) - Applications from high school students to attend the New Mexico Hispanic Youth Symposium topped 656, a 54 percent increase over 2009 numbers.  Students throughout the state applied online to attend the third annual New Mexico Hispanic Youth Symposium, a four-day, three-night college empowerment program for at-promise high school students.  The event will be held at the University of New Mexico from June 15-18 and is hosted in partnership with New Mexico MESA and College Enrichment and Outreach Programs of the University of New Mexico.


Washington, DC (May 20, 2010) - CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) will be named the 2010 Corporation of the Year during the Hispanic College Fund's 17th annual gala, to be held on October 29, 2010 at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, D.C. The company will be honored for its commitment to increasing ethnic diversity within high-need industries and its generous support of the Hispanic College Fund.


Los Angeles, CA (May 19, 2010) - More than 80 parents and students from Garfield, Roosevelt, and Wilson High Schools will be attending a bilingual college information night at Roosevelt High School tonight, as the Hispanic College Fund prepares the community for its second annual Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Symposium, a college residency that will bring 150 students from Belmont, Garfield, Roosevelt, Santee and Wilson High Schools to the campus of UCLA from August 10-13 to introduce the students to an array of motivational speakers, college resources, $10,500 in scholarship competitions, career and community involvement workshops, and more.


Los Angeles, CA (May 17, 2010) - More than 600 students at Belmont, Roosevelt, and Santee High Schools in downtown Los Angeles will participate in presentations that encourage them to pursue a college education and professional career.  The programming is part of a pilot initiative by the Hispanic College Fund to expand the reach of its national program, the Hispanic Youth Institute, by bringing successful curriculum components to the larger student bodies of underserved Hispanic-majority high schools.

Washington, DC (May 10, 2010) - The Hispanic College Fund (HCF) announces a partnership with VLC Entertainment to create a culinary arts scholarship program. VLC Entertainment is launching the sale of its VLC membership rewards cards, of which a portion of proceeds for each card sold will be contributed to HCF to fund the scholarship program.


Washington, DC (May 4, 2010) - More than 3,000 high school students applied to attend this year's Hispanic Youth Institute, a college empowerment program run annually by the Hispanic College Fund and community partners across the nation. This is the largest number of applicants since the program's 2004 founding. Approximately 1,000 students will be admitted to the program this year.

 "The level of interest that our program has received this year is astounding," said Stina Augustsson, national director of pre-college programs of the Hispanic College Fund. "The number of applications submitted for 2010 demonstrates the clear need for the Hispanic Youth Institute in the community. Although we can't serve every student who applied to the Hispanic Youth Institute this year, with the support of our donors, we hope to scale up the program so that it can reach many more Hispanic youth in the future."


DALLAS, TX (May 4, 2010) - Hispanic College Fund (HCF) has joined as a supporting sponsor of the Hispanic PR & Social Media Conference (www.hispanicprconference.com) being organized by the Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA) and the Hispanic PR Blog in partnership with the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) in Dallas, May 10-12.

As part of its sponsorship HCF will actively promote the conference to its members and HCF members will get a discounted rate of $425 to attend the conference.

April 27, 2010 (Washington, DC) - The Intel Foundation has donated $100,000 to support the Hispanic College Fund's mission of preparing the next generation of Hispanic professionals. This gift will provide four four-year scholarships to Hispanic college students studying for careers in the science, math, engineering and technology industries. In addition, numerous Intel employees will serve as volunteers for the Hispanic College Fund's 2010 Hispanic Youth Institute, a college empowerment program designed to motivate high school students to pursue college degrees and professional careers.


Los Angeles, CA (April 19, 2010) - For the second year in a row, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has announced that he will serve as the honorary chair of the Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Symposium. This college empowerment program is expected to serve more than 200 students from Belmont, Santee, Roosevelt, Garfield and Grant High Schools. It will be hosted on the campus of UCLA from August 10-13, 2010. The program was first brought to Los Angeles in 2009.

Washington, DC (March 30, 2010) - The Hispanic College Fund announced today the release of a new report which documents the efficacy of the Fund's Hispanic Youth Institute program. The report, made possible by funding from AT&T, found that the Hispanic Youth Institute was overwhelmingly successful in changing the academic trajectories of low-income Latino students.


Washington, DC (March 25, 2010) - The Hispanic College Fund has hired Claudia Avila-Martin, a former non-profit volunteer coordinator, to direct the 2010 Silicon Valley and Central Valley Hispanic Youth Institutes. Avila-Martin has been passionate about Hispanic education since she attended a math and science program for girls as a teenager. She has since remained involved as a volunteer in the program. She is a graduate of Santa Clara University, where she majored in Political Science and Spanish.


Los Angeles (March 25, 2010) - On April 16, 2010 at 6 PM  the students of Belmont High School will host a benefit talent show MC-ed by actress Masiela Lusha, famous for her role as Carmen Lopez on The George Lopez Show. The event will raise funds to send alumni of the 2009 Hispanic Youth Symposium back to the 2010 symposium to serve as volunteers and near-peer mentors for students attending this year. The talent show will take place in the school's auditorium and will feature seven different acts, including performances by faculty and students. Prizes including $100 cash for first place and Macy's gift certificates will be awarded to the second and third place winners.  Admission is only $5 per person.


Santa Clara, CA (March 23, 2010) - The Hispanic College Fund, National Hispanic University, and Santa Clara University announced today that student applications for the 2010 Silicon Valley Hispanic Youth Symposium (HYS) are now available on www.hispanicyouth.org. High school students who attend Andrew Hill, James Lick, Yerba Buena, W.C. Overfelt High Schools, or other schools in the San Jose area and are scheduled to graduate with the Class of 2012 or Class of 2013 are encouraged to apply to the program, which is focused on empowering youth for success in college, career and community service. The Silicon Valley HYS will take place from July 28 -31, 2010 on the campuses of Santa Clara University and National Hispanic University. The program requires only a $10 commitment from students; all other expenses, including lodging, transportation and food, are covered. Approximately 100 students will be selected to attend.


Tempe, AZ (March 16, 2010) - The Hispanic College Fund and Arizona State University announced today that student applications for the 2010 Arizona Hispanic Youth Institute (HYS) are now available on www.hispanicyouth.org. Arizona high school students scheduled to graduate with the Class of 2012 or Class of 2013 are encouraged to apply to the program, which is focused on empowering youth for success in college, career and community service. The Arizona Hispanic Youth Symposium (HYS), which kicks off the Institute's program, will take place from July 7 -10, 2010 at Arizona State University - Tempe. It requires only a $10 commitment from students; lodging and food will be covered for all students; Phoenix-area students will also be provided transportation to the event. Approximately 100 students will be selected to attend.


March 8, 2010 (Washington, DC) - The Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation has awarded a grant of $125,000 to the Hispanic College Fund (HCF) in support of the national Hispanic Youth Institute and the HCF Scholarship Program. The Hispanic Youth Institute and the scholarship program are the first two steps in the Hispanic College Fund's development pipeline, which is dedicated to preparing the next generation of Hispanic professionals.


Washington, DC (February 23, 2010) - The Hispanic College Fund and Ashoka's Youth Venture have partnered to award a total of $10,000 to student groups with winning proposals for community improvement projects. The competition opens today and will close on March 26, 2010. Applications can be accessed at www.hispanicyouth.org/institute. A total of up to 20 seed grants, each valued at $500, will be awarded to the teams with the best proposals.

Washington, DC (February 17, 2010) - The Hispanic College Fund has hired Marco Hidalgo, a former marketing and sales professional, to direct the 2010 New Mexico and Arizona Hispanic Youth Institutes. Hidalgo has been involved with the program since 2008, when he began serving as a logistics volunteer at the New Mexico Youth Symposium. He has since served as a lead resident advisor for the 2009 New Mexico Hispanic Youth Symposium and as a resident advisor for the inaugural Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Symposium, launched in 2009.


Washington, DC (February 12, 2010) - Yesterday, the College Board named the Hispanic College Fund as one of three middle states recipients of its CollegeKeys CompactTM Award, an honor given to recognize non-profit innovation in programs that help low-income students get ready, get in and get through college. The Hispanic College Fund's Hispanic Youth Institute (HYI) took the prize in the "Getting Ready" category of the competition.

2010 Application Season Starts Today; $500,000 Awarded Annually to Support Diverse Students Pursuing Hospitality Careers

BETHESDA, MD -Nov. 16, 2009 - The Hispanic College Fund (HCF) and UNCF - the United Negro College Fund are accepting applications today through Feb. 16, 2010 for the Marriott Scholars Program for the 2010-2011 school year. Eligible students can apply for renewable scholarships of up to $9,000 annually in tuition support for up to four years.

Today Kodak and Yahoo! En Español unveil a digital photo mosaic using all of the submitted photographs as a tribute to Hispanic families across the United States. We received over 1,430 photos from people expressing  pride in their Hispanic Heritage and raised $20,000.00 in scholarship money for the Hispanic College Fund!  Check it out at http://www.yahoo-herenciahispana.com/. Community-led, year-round programming to empower students for success in college, career and community service

Washington, D.C. (September 28, 2009) – Today the Hispanic College Fund (HCF) launched the Hispanic Youth Institute, a web-based initiative designed to empower high school students to pursue a college education, enter a professional career, and give back to their communities. The Hispanic Youth Institute will initially serve the 2,600 alumni of HCF’s Hispanic Youth Symposium, a four-day college empowerment program that has been hosted in numerous cities across the U.S. since 2004. Alumni will invite other students to participate in student-led Hispanic Youth Institute programming, with the goal of creating grassroots cultural change amongst Latinos in American high schools.

 


Special program honors Hispanic traditions through digital photos and features a joint donation to the Hispanic College Fund

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 15 -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK - News) and Yahoo! En Espanol (www.yahooenespanol.com) have partnered to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and give back to the community through "Muestra Tu Herencia" (Show Your Heritage), a unique interactive online photo-sharing program where users can submit digital photos on www.yahooenespanol.com/kodak to showcase their unique culture and traditions. For every photograph uploaded, Kodak and Yahoo! En Español will donate $2 respectively (up to $20,000 combined) to the Hispanic College Fund, a national non-profit organization that provides educational, scholarship and mentoring programs to U.S. Hispanic students.

Dallas, TX (June 30, 2009) – Today, almost 200 of the North Texas area’s most promising Hispanic high school students will gather at Southern Methodist University (SMU) to launch Texas’ first-ever Dallas Hispanic Youth Symposium (HYS), a four-day, three-night college access program hosted by the Hispanic College Fund in cooperation with SMU.


Eight Puerto Rican Students to Receive the Manuel Candamo Memorial Scholarship

200+ Students Prepare for Success in College and Career

Los Angeles, CA (May 21, 2009) - The Hispanic College Fund program announced today that Kaiser Permanente in California has dedicated $50,000 to support its programs this year, including $25,000 to bring the Hispanic Youth Symposium to Los Angeles during the summer of 2009. The Symposium will be presented by the Hispanic College Fund and is designed to guide Los Angeles youth towards achieving a college education, pursuing a professional career, and giving back to their communities as volunteers.


Inaugural Los Angeles Program to Educate 200 Students On College Admissions and Financial Aid

Los Angeles, CA (May 21, 2009) - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has announced that he will serve as the Honorary Chair of this year's Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Symposium, a program presented by the Hispanic College Fund to guide Los Angeles youth to achieve a college education, pursue a professional career, and give back to their communities as volunteers.


On April 29, 2009, the CEO of the Hispanic College Fund, J. Fernando Barrueta, presented a testimony to the Education Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, during their first meeting under the Obama administration. Mr. Barrueta spoke specifically on how the Hispanic College Fund's Hispanic Youth Symposium serves as a programmatic model for increasing Latino student attraction and retention in higher education.

Company Honored for Commitment to Diversity Within the Health Care Industry

Washington, D.C. (April 21, 2009) - Kaiser Permanente will be named the 2009 Corporation of the Year during the Hispanic College Fund's 16th annual gala, to be held on October 30, 2009 at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, D.C. The company will be honored for its commitment to increasing ethnic diversity within the health care industry - and in particular, for providing Latino students with opportunities to enter this growing field through their "College to Caring" scholarship and their extensive support of college preparation curriculum for Latino youth.


Event Will Highlight Importance of Service Within the Latino Community

Washington, DC (April 15, 2009) - The Hispanic College Fund (HCF) will honor over 100 volunteers from the D.C. metropolitan area with a reception hosted by TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, on April 22, 2009 at 5:30 PM. A number of the volunteers will receive the White House's Presidential Service award, which recognizes volunteers who have dedicated over 100 hours of community service to a non-profit organization during any given calendar year. Idalia Fernandez, President of the Hispanic College Fund, and Robert Worley, Market President of TD Bank, will speak at the event.


Organization Receives Four Stars for Exceptional Non-Profit Management

Washington, DC (April 8, 2009) - The Hispanic College Fund (HCF) has been recognized for its commitment to financial responsibility with the highest possible rating from Charity Navigator - America's largest charity evaluator, which annually rates the fiscal integrity of non-profit organizations. According to Charity Navigator, a four-star rated organization "excels, as compared to other organizations in America, in successfully managing its finances in an efficient and effective manner." This is the second time that the organization has been awarded this honor.


The Hispanic College Fund is currently accepting applications for the Google Scholarship Program. Hispanic students from throughout the country will be selected to receive a $10,000 Google scholarship to attend college this fall. In addition, the scholarship winners will travel to Mountain View, California, to visit the Googleplex, Google's headquarters.


Over the past three years, The Manuel Candamo Memorial Scholarship Program has made available a total of $17,500 in financial support for Puerto Rican college and college-bound students residing in the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico.  In 2009, $10,000 is available in scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500.


The Hispanic College Fund has today announced that the name of its leadership development program, Hispanic Young Professionals, will change to the Karen Marquez Institute for Hispanic Young Professionals (KMI). The name change seeks to highlight the memory of Karen Marquez, co-owner and executive vice president of MVM, a private security contractor that provides staffing, training, translation, and related services to U.S. government clients.


A call to action has today been issued by the Hispanic College Fund (HCF) to sign up to mentor students online on January 19, 2009, Martin Luther King Service Day, which takes place during National Mentoring Month. The Hispanic College Fund (HCF) is urging people from across the U.S. to connect with students online who are eager to attend college and transition into successful careers.


Hispanic College Fund scholarship deadlines are quickly approaching. Most applications close on March 15, 2009, however many close as soon as January 31, 2009. Students majoring in nursing, pharmacy, and hospitality are particularly encouraged to apply for scholarships due to the demands of the U.S. workforce.

The Hispanic Youth Symposium is a four-day, three-night program that brings 100-200 Hispanic high school students to a college campus for workshops on accessing and affording college!


In line with its mission to develop the next generation of Hispanic professionals, the Hispanic College Fund (HCF) will open applications for its 2009 scholarships on December 15, 2008. Scholarships will be available for undergraduate and graduate students who are seeking cutting-edge careers as engineers, pharmacists, nurses, doctors, hotel executives, chief financial officers, and much more.


The Hispanic College Fund announced that it is now accepting applications for the 2009 Marriott Scholars Program. The program, sponsored by the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, helps support Hispanic students interested in pursuing careers within the hospitality industry.


The Hispanic College Fund was joined by Dallas Cowboys Veteran, Tony Casillas, who served as emcee and played golf at the Fund's 9th Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas. Dexter Coakley, also a Dallas Cowboy Veteran, played in the tournament hosted by General Dynamics and Gulfstream Aerospace, that generated more than $125,000.

Virginia Governor Tim Kaine last week introduced Mauricio Ayala as the student keynote speaker at the 15th Annual Hispanic College Fund Scholarship Awards Gala on October 17, 2008.  Governor Kaine recognized Ayala as a Latino role model who inspires students and scholarship sponsors from across the nation.


The Hispanic College Fund will launch a promotional campaign at Belmont High School in Los Angeles tomorrow to encourage participation in the 2009 Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Symposium as well as college and career achievement. Over 1,000 freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are expected to attend the lunchtime event.


"This past summer, students across the Commonwealth had the opportunity to participate in two Hispanic Youth Symposiums held at George Mason University and the University of Richmond," said Governor Kaine. "The remarkable work the Hispanic College Fund is doing to help develop the next generation of Latino professionals will continue to strengthen the social fabric of our communities. I look forward to attending this year's gala and interacting with all the students who continuously show commitment by investing in their education."


Sodexo is to receive the Corporation of the Year award at the Hispanic College Fund Scholarship Awards Gala on October 17, 2008 at the J.W. Marriott. Sodexo has invested in the Hispanic College since 2003, contributing approximately $481,000 to scholarships, funding 100 students to achieve their college education.


More than $100,000 has been donated from sponsors in support of the 9th Annual Charity Golf Tournament to benefit programs for the Hispanic College Fund on Monday, October 27, 2008. The tournament will be hosted by General Dynamics and Gulfstream Aerospace at the Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas.
