Los Angeles
Deadline: May 15, 2012

The HYI Kick-Off
The 2012 Los Angeles Hispanic Youth Institute will serve select cohorts of rising sophomores and juniors from Belmont, Jordan, Roosevelt, and Santee high schools. This summer, approximately 60 high school students and 20 college student leaders will attend a three-day college residency at Loyola Marymount University. During this residency, they will learn to overcome both real and perceived barriers to college access and be empowered to become positive leaders in their local communities. The students will participate in college and career workshops, connect with local Hispanic professionals, meet college admissions officers, interact with near-peer mentors, listen to inspirational speakers, and compete for scholarships. Throughout the on-campus experience, the students will build their confidence and receive practical tools to help them along their pathway to college. Following the summer kick-off, each participating student will be tasked with establishing a college-going culture in their greater communities through a series of year-round programming.
Through 2012-2013 programming, approximately 4,000 high school students and 200 parents will be served, and more than 250 volunteers will be engaged.
