The HYI Kick-Off
Beginning in the summer, approximately 100 high school students from six East San Jose high schools will experience a university campus through a four-day, three-night college empowerment program where they will learn to overcome both real and perceived barriers to college access. The students will participate in college and career workshops, connect with local Hispanic professionals, meet college admissions officers, interact with near-peer mentors, listen to inspirational speakers, and compete for scholarships. Throughout the on-campus experience, the students will build their confidence and receive practical tools to help them along their pathway to college.
The high schools that will be served are Andrew Hill, James Lick, William C. Overfelt, Yerba Buena, Escuela Popular, and the Latino College Preparatory Academy in San Jose.
Long-Term Goals
Based on national alumni post surveys dating back to 2004, we expect:
- 75 percent of alumni will achieve a bachelor’s degree within six years of graduating from high school
- 50 percent of alumni will pursue careers in business, health care, or STEM
- 65 percent of alumni will report having volunteered at least four hours/month in the previous six months
