Lupita Lourdes Medina is responsible for managing and developing the Hispanic Youth Institute (HYI) in the Silicon Valley. She implements year-round programming for underserved students in the Eastside School District of San Jose, CA.
Lupita grew up in Mexico and first came to the United States at the age of 14 speaking no English at the time. She was the first in her family to attend college, and knows firsthand the struggles that minority students and families go through to achieve higher education.
Lupita graduated from San Jose State with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and Spanish, a concentration in International Business and a minor in Latin American Studies. During her college years, she worked and volunteered at the Sacred Heart Parish Community in San Jose where she ran an afterschool homework center dedicated to underserved Hispanic students. Lupita focused on improving students’ grades through tutoring programs and parent involvement.
She first volunteered with the Hispanic College Fund as a “Hispanic Hero” for the Hispanic Youth Institute of 2010 and then served as the Chair for the Hispanic Heroes workshop for the 2011 HYI program. Prior to joining HCF, Lupita worked as a Business Manager for a small family business which she owns and manages along with her family.
