«I remember having a 0.33 GPA at one time.»

 I remember being labeled «at-risk» before I could fully understand the meaning of this term. The possibility of going to «Pen» had nothing to do with a university. My GPA was a 0.33. I was a kid with no aspirations, values, or hope.

My probation did not come as a surprise to anyone. I was fortunate to be placed in the San Diego Choice Program, a program designed to help youth get back on track. It was in the Choice Program that, I learned that I could aspire to a life outside of the confined corners of a correctional facility. I began to re-evaluate my life.

My transformation from «at-risk» to «role-model» did not happen over night. I enrolled in several, counseling sessions, recreational activities, and leadership classes. I graduated from high school with a 3.3 GPA and was recognized not only in school, but also in the local news and newspapers for my outstanding volunteer work and community service. I completed over 1000 hours of community service. My gratitude to those who helped me and desire to give back enabled me to change my path from probation to education.

Currently, I am a philosophy major attending the University of California, San Diego. I plan on furthering my education and obtain a Masters and PhD in Philosophy. I am optimistic about my future. Upon completion of my college degree, I hope to collaborate on a movement to develop more leaders from «el barrio».

As I examine my life and look at where I’ve come from and what I have accomplished, I am grateful for the privilege of an education. Through education, we can transcend the barriers that affect low income families and achieve our dreams. For all of those students, who like me were labeled  «at-risk», my message to them is simple: Work hard and don’t let a label get you down.
